Nowadays few projects are implemented in only one location, without any outsourcing, offshoring or any other form of distributed development. Any kind of distributed development implies that there is a distance between the project staff. This distance can be geographical, time zones, culture, language, politics or history. Any IT outsourcing decision should be based on the business case of IT Outsourcing in the project. The actual development of the project should be continuously compared with the assumptions made to detect the deviations from the expected business case. In practice, however, these calculations are seldom made. This White Paper describes the requirements for a comprehensive calculation of the profitability of IT outsourcing projects. A cost model is presented which is the basis for further analysis, especially for assessing the relevance of each of the main factors.
